Methuen, MA — John Neil Murphy, 80, of Methuen, died peacefully in his home on Monday, September 23, 2013.
Born in Lawrence, Mass., on October 4, 1932, he was the son of the late Mary A. (Scannell) Murphy and the late John J. Murphy. John and the Murphy family grew up on Eutaw Street in Lawrence. He attended Lawrence schools. John's father, also named John, was an electrician at the former Stevens Mills in North Andover.
John pursued a career in finance and accounting with Western Electric and Lucent Technologies in North Andover until his retirement. He graduated fron Central Catholic High School and from Boston University with a degree in economics and a master's degree in business administration. He served his country as a member of the United States Army and received an honorable discharge.
A private person, John enjoyed travel within the United States, computer technology, and research, and especially the progress of science. He pursued family geneology and provided many members of his family with historic and anecdotal segments of their past. At one time, he researched and became active in issues involving the use of fluoride in the Methuen water supply. He often campaigned vociferously and vigorously in local political issues.
John was a kind and introspective person who could provide an opinion and often the science background for that opinion. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
He is survived by three cousins, Daniel C. Murphy of Beverly, Mass., Judith Murphy of Franklin, Mass., and Ellen Bouchard of Durham, N.H.
