Haverhill — Theodore Arthur Guvelis, 62, lifelong resident of Haverhill, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at his home.
Mr. Guvelis was born in Haverhill on April 14, 1951, adored son of Photine (Vlahos) and the late Arthur Theodore Guvelis. Graduate of Haverhill High School and Salem State College.
Ted served for many years as a member of the Holy Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church of Haverhill. He was a very generous and giving person who celebrated life and his orthodox culture. Ted served as an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church Choir Federation and acted as Choir Director for several years and remained an active member until his passing. He was a long standing member of the fraternal organization of the Ahepa Acropolis Chapter 39 of Haverhill. Ted had an active role throughout the construction phase and in 1996 he served as the first property manager of the Ahepa Corporation of the Ahepa Elderly Housing Apartments in Haverhill. In his job, he always made an extra effort to make the residents of the apartments feel special; serving them holiday meals and engaging them in conversation and community events. Prior to serving on the board and until April of 2011, he was involved in the “Caring and Sharing Program,” a program of serving meals to the less fortunate. As an active parish member, he served as the Church Treasurer. He was actively involved in organizing festivities at the Greek Orthodox Church; including as a volunteer at the Annual Greek Festival.
Recently, Ted was the recipient of the Laity Ministry Award of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Metropolis of Boston. Ted was also nominated as the recipient of the Ahepa Society’s “Man of the Year Award” which was to be presented to him later this month.
Ted was currently employed at the Atria Merrimack Place in Newburyport.
His surviving family members include his loving mother, Photine (Vlahos) Guvelis; sister, Genie Mansour and her husband, Louis, of Hampton Falls, NH; brother, Gus Guvelis and his wife, Cindy, of Conway, NH; nieces, Nicole Cirinna, Kristina Coughenour and Stephanie Mansour; nephew, Alex Gouvelis, who all knew him as “Nouvo.” He will be sadly missed by many other friends, as his infectious smile will be forever in their hearts.
