Merrimac, MA — Martha Ann (Killilea) Flinn, age 67, longtime resident of Merrimac, died peacefully Wednesday evening, August 27, 2013, at Penacook Place in Haverhill, with her loving family by her side.
Born October 12, 1945, in Chelsea, Mass., to the late John J. and Mae L. (Molloy) Killilea, Martha grew up in Swampscott and Lynn and was a 1963 graduate of Lynn English High School. She attended the Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in Hanover, N.H., graduating in 1967, and received a certificate in Total Quality Management from Northern Essex Community College.
She worked at Union Hospital in Lynn until 1969, when she moved to Merrimac. She was employed at the former Hale Hospital in Haverhill as a registered nurse from 1969 until she retired in 2001. She had been a charge nurse, head nurse, nurse manager and staff nurse on the Surgical Day Care Unit. She was a member of the Massachusetts Nurses Association.
In 1969 she married Thomas Joseph Flinn of Merrimac and became an active member of the community. She was involved in boy scouts, was a den mother, and a member of the executive committee. She had been a member of The Couplings, the fire auxiliary since 1970 and had served as its president since 1982.
For many years she was a season ticket holder for the Boston Ballet. She loved theater, concerts, music of all kinds, traveling, motor homing, lifetime learning, and working in her garden with her plants. In 1995, she and her husband bought an old house on Birch Meadow Road and rebuilt it, and it is now Flinn Acres Farm.
However, her life revolved around her family, her husband, Tom; son, John J. Flinn and wife, Laurie (Atkins), of Merrimac and their daughter, Jordan; cousin, David Splaine and wife, Vicki, of Merrimac, and their daughters, Julia and Maria; and Dave Gonyer and children, Jacob and fiancee, Jessica Santos, and Kiana, all of Haverhill. She also leaves her sister, Ellen (Robert) Greeke of Maine; adopted son, Anthony of Maynard; niece, Jane of California and her sons, Chad and Bret; sisters-in-law, Peggy Glenn of California and Karen Dudley and husband, Larry, and their daughter, Jody Dudley of Haverhill.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services at Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main St., Merrimac, will be Friday, August 30, 2013, at 3 p.m., immediately followed by visiting hours from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made either to Merrimac Fire Auxiliary (Couplings) or Hose Company No. 1, c/o Merrimac Fire Department, 16 East Main St., Merrimac, MA 01860.
