Harold L. Nelson

Haverhill — Harold L. Nelson, 86, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2013, at Merrimack Valley Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family. Harold was the husband of Georgianna M. (Hurd) Nelson, and the late Elizabeth (Bateman) Nelson.

Born in Haverhill on July 30, 1927, Harold was the son of the late Arthur W. and Ethel (Lombard) Nelson.

Educated in Haverhill, he graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1945, and continued his studies enrolling in the adult education program at Northern Essex Community College. He worked many years at the former Borden Chemical Co. in North Andover, where he progressed to quality control Inspector, before retiring in 1988.

As a young man Harold attended First Baptist Church, and later joined Riverside Memorial Church, where he sang in the choir. He earned his Eagle Scout as a member of Troop #12. As a young adult, Harold was active in youth ministry and later contributed to interfaith programs developed by local Haverhill churches.

He was co-founder and member of the Georgetown Theater Workshop for over 30 years, and was a volunteer and served on the board of directors of Haverhill Community TV. Harold was an accomplished actor and for many years traveled extensively as a one-man show portraying Mark Twain.

Besides his wife of 57 years, Harold is survived by his children, Linda White of Rush Springs, Okla., Patricia Langlois and husband, John, of Kingston, N.H., Kim Eubanks and husband, Richard, of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Laurie Salvi and husband, Jeffery, of Haverhill; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. One of eight children he leaves his brother, Gordon Nelson and wife, Adeline, of Lenoir, Tenn.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral on Wednesday, at 10 a.m., at Riverside Memorial Church. Calling hours at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill, will be on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery.
