Joseph J. Healey, 84


North Andover — Joseph J. Healey, 84, died Thursday December 20, 2012 at the Wingate Nursing Home in Andover. He was born on November 1, 1928 in Brooklyn N.Y., son of the late John and Elizabeth (McMannamna) Healey.

Raised in Cambridge he was a graduate of Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School where he lettered in baseball and basketball before enlisting in the Army to proudly serve his country in Japan during World War II. Following his service Joseph continued his education graduating from Boston College.

He then married his wife Louise in September 1961, and settled down in Reading, MA where they lived for 33 years and raised their family, before moving to North Andover. Joseph was employed as a Quality Control Inspector at the American Can Company in Needham, for 23 years before his retirement in 1993. During his retirement years, Joseph traveled with Louise to Ireland and made several trips to Florida. He enjoyed fishing and photography, and was also a member for the Knights of Columbus.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 51 years Louise (Lang) Healey of North Andover; children, Joseph Healey Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Apex, N.C., Paula Smith and her husband, Michael of Methuen, Maureen Smeltzer and her husband, Robert of Harwich, and Gerald Healey of North Andover; grandchildren, Joseph and Daniel Healey, Emma, Miranda, and Evan Smith, Patrick, Mathew, and Erin Smeltzer, Jerry and Andrew Healey, as well as several nieces and nephews. Joseph was predeceased by his siblings Jack and Alice Healey.

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 22 at the Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence St., Andover, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church in North Andover. Burial will be private at Bourne National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, family has requested that memorial contributions may be made in Joseph’s name to the American Diabetes Association P.O. Box 11454 Alexandria, VA 22312.
