Dorothy (Russell) Mikonis Moffitt, 83


Haverhill — Dorothy (Russell) Mikonis Moffitt passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family on January 6, 2013 after a lengthy illness at Haverhill Crossings in Haverhill. She was born in Newbury, on August 9, 1929, daughter of the late Samuel and Bertha (Milton) Russell. Raised and educated in Newbury she was a graduate of Perley High School, Georgetown.

She was employed for many years as a QA Inspector for Lucent (AT&T, Western Electric), before her retirement. She was a member of the Portland Street Baptist Church in Haverhill, where she taught Sunday school and held several church board positions. She was also actively involved in the Georgetown Grange and was a Girl Scout and 4H Leader for many years. Dorothy was an avid reader, gardener, and crossword puzzle enthusiast, and loved to sing and dance entertaining her neighbors at Haverhill Crossings.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Jayne (Mikonis) Schmidt and her husband, William of Atkinson, N.H., Terry (Mikonis) Gilchrist and her husband, Richard of East Kingston, N.H., and Bette (Mikonis) Troy and her husband, John of Newburyport; grandchildren, Brian, John, and Julie Gilchrist, Alison and Molly Troy, Ryan and Lauren Schmidt; brothers, Kenneth L. and Richard Russell; sisters, Virginia (Russell) West, Geraldine (Russell) Dole, Marilyn (Russell) Goodwin and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, John M. Mikonis and second husband, George J. Moffitt as well as five other siblings; sisters, Helen, Norma and Marjorie; and brothers Edward and Samuel.

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Merton E. Roberts, Jr. & Conte Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant St., Georgetown. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be private at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Dorothy’s family has requested that memorial contributions be made in her name to the Portland Street Baptist Church, 29 Portland Street, Haverhill, MA 01830.
