Pa. borough raises orange flag for street crossers
LEMOYNE, Pa. (AP) — A central Pennsylvania borough is raising an orange flag to make sure pedestrians get the right of way while crossing streets.
The borough of Lemoyne has placed plastic bins filled with bright orange flags at two of its busiest intersections. A sign posted above each container reads "Use Flags While Crossing." Officials say people are supposed to take the flag, cross the street, and deposit it in a bin on the opposite side.
Lemoyne council member John Judson says the program is intended to make pedestrians more visible and to remind drivers that walkers have the right of way. Police say the practice is voluntary and officers will redistribute and lightly monitor the supply of flags.
Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., once had a similar program for pedestrians. Spokeswoman Christine Dugan says it lasted for about a year, until the number of flags began to dwindle.
