To the editor:

Yes, the spirit of giving is alive and well. The Dollar Store on North Broadway in Salem is one proof of that! The manager of this store donated huge boxes of Christmas toys to the clients of the Food for the Hungry Food Pantry. Food for the shelves was also donated, as well as hats, scarves, and mittens.

At the same time, Dawn Chalmers from our sister church, The North Salem United Methodist Church, had organized a coat drive. We, at the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church, were able to distribute coats and toys for two Wednesdays. We received many hugs. We witnessed a lot of tears — and had a few ourselves. Many people said that receiving these items made their Christmas!

We want to thank the Dollar Store and everyone who donated a coat. Dawn Chalmers is ready to do it again next year. May God bless each and everyone who took part in this effort.
