---- — To the editor:
The ongoing process of so-called selective thinning of diseased hemlock trees on the east side of Winnekenni Park has resulted in utter and wanton destruction of a large area of a beautiful forest with peaceful trails used by thousands of walkers, joggers and mountain bikers every year.
It was the jewel of Haverhill. At least 90 percent of the trees in an area of about 150 acres are gone. Hundreds more trees are marked for cutting down. We are dumbfounded that Mayor James Fiorentini, the Audubon Society’s Ecological Extension Service and the city’s Conservation and Forest Management committees signed off on this. We are not tree huggers, but the logging should stop immediately until a thorough review can take place.
