Letter: Route 213 guardrails seem ineffective

To the editor:

Regarding the new guardrail that has been installed on Route 213 in Methuen: Who is the genius who proposed this replacement for the one that was previously there? The one that was there before was too close to the road and needed constant repair.

To replace it with the same type moved in a bit is the ultimate in ineffectual government thinking. To solve the problem of traffic crossing into oncoming lanes is not rocket science. If this type of barrier can stop a vehicle, why not put it in the center of the median strip?

I feel that we could have put steel guardrails down the median or Jersey barriers the first time and they would do the job and still be there. It would also give a driver an escape route to the grass in an emergency rather than cause a blockage in the left lane of the road.
