Letter: Thanking a carrier for years of service

To the editor:

After so many stories of violence, political bickering and tragedy, I would like to offer a tribute to a dear friend, who after 36 years of delivering The Eagle-Tribune has retired. She has served customers from Salem this entire time.

Olga Klufts is a person who went above and beyond delivering a newspaper. She would help the elderly with errands, watch their homes and be observant that they were safe. Her customers when they found that she was retiring deluged her with gifts and notes. She told me, “I never knew how I touched their lives.” I can say from personal experience that she has indeed touched mine.

She has served the people of Salem without any concern for her safety in bad weather. I felt she was more reliable than the mail. We will miss her, as I’m sure The Eagle-Tribune will. Hers will be hard shoes to fill. Her customers want to thank her for her dedication to them because for many she was a lifeline. She deserves to rest and be able to spend more time with her family.

Thank you for a job well done. Have a happy, healthy New Year.
