Letter: Zanni has been willing to listen

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — To the editor:

I felt compelled to write this letter after reading the front page of the Sept. 30 issue of The Eagle-Tribune. In that issue, City Councilor Jennifer Kannan attacked Mayor Steve Zanni for his lack of communication with council members. As a member of the Methuen City Council, I want to be clear that Jennifer Kannan does not speak for this councilor.

It is no secret that Mayor Zanni and I have rarely been on the same page on political issues. Quite often we have found ourselves in heated debates, disagreeing quite passionately on multiple occasions. In fact, I am the only sitting councilor who openly supported Mayor Zanni’s opponent two years ago.

However, since taking office as mayor, I have found Mayor Zanni to have an inclusive, open-door policy. It is not my place to speak on behalf of other councilors, but I can say that Mayor Zanni has always been willing to listen, return my phone calls, seek my input, and bend his schedule if I happen to unexpectedly stop by his office.

Despite the insinuation that the City Council has had poor relations with the mayor’s office, I personally find the opposite to be true. While I expect that the mayor and I will continue to have our differences, I also believe that he will always put the best interests of our city first. This is why I will be casting my vote for Mayor Zanni on Nov. 5.
