Letter: IT privatization can save Methuen money

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — To the editor:

A City Council trying to impose its authority over a new mayor cost the city approximately $237,000 in savings since their failure to act last February. Now it’s time for the council to do the right thing and approve Mayor Stephen Zanni’s IT privatization proposal.

Every year, the council struggles to make cuts in order to balance the budget. Ultimately, they are ceremonially successful and proceed with old reliable — raising our taxes. Last February, the council had the opportunity to head into budget negotiations already having saved an estimated $174,000 for the taxpayers and they balked at it. Due in part to this failure to act, property taxes were increased and a new meals tax was adopted.

The taxpayers lost because of what amounted to political grandstanding by the City Council. It’s time for the council to embrace the mayor’s proposal and put Methuen on a stronger financial footing for the future.
