To the editor:
New Hampshire HB 370, the repeal of the school voucher program, has passed the New Hampshire House and is awaiting action in the Senate. I strongly urge members of the New Hampshire Senate to vote to repeal the school voucher program.
The Republican-sponsored program does two things: It crosses the line with regards to separation of church and state, and it allows tax dollars paid by the citizens of New Hampshire to be used to send children to church-sponsored schools where history and science are taught according to the Bible.
Our tax dollars should not be spent educating children in religion. Children’s religious education is the parents’ responsibility and should not be funded with New Hampshire citizen’s tax dollars.
Support for vouchers is essentially support for privatizing public education. Our country was built on a strong public education system — one of the best, if not the best, in the world. Privatizing education puts us on a path to Third World status where only the rich are educated.
