To the editor:
Whatever happened to the City of Lawrence? When I was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, Lawrence was a nice, quiet city. I remember walking from Tower Hill to downtown, and no one would bother me. I could even be wearing gold jewelry, and not one person would even come over to me.
Today, it is a completely different story. Because of the gangs throughout the city, if you wear the wrong color clothes, you put yourself in danger. I listen to a scanner at work to pass the time. I was really shocked to hear an “all cars available” one Sunday morning at 3 a.m. for shots fired. As the call continued, they had called for State Police backup with a police dog. I also heard that it started inside and spread into the street. Recently, I read that it was a child’s party that was just getting over at 3 a.m.
When is the mayor, the police and the justice system going to do something about all the violence in the city? The city should not have to call the State Police for backup.
