Letter: Support effort to block cell tower

To the editor:

I would like to apologize to all those who went to the Windham Town Hall recently to have their voices heard regarding the zoning variance to put a commercial cell phone tower in a rurally zoned residential neighborhood. The petitioner requested the delay mid-day, I was notified at 1:57 p.m. by my attorney and later by the town.

The zoning board meeting has been rescheduled for March 23.

I respectfully ask, that all residents interested in protecting their family and their most valuable possession, their home, come to the Town Hall on March 23 and have your voice heard. Helping to protect our families and homes will help you to protect yours.

The variance is not about coverage, it is about greed, the homeowner at 111 North Lowell Road stands to gain lease income and Verizon Wireless can avoid co-locating and paying rent on established cell tower sites. Not to mention there are a number of other providers whose coverage in the area is more than adequate.

If this variance is granted, and sets a precedent, each cell phone provider will be looking to locate their own tower and towers could go up every 4,000 feet regardless of zoning.

These towers belong in commercially zoned space, of which there is plenty. Don't let the greed of an individual homeowner and a $30 billion company permanently impair the value of all of our homes and put our families at risk, including your own.
