No response
There was a neighborhood dispute and police were called. Some 45 minutes later and still no officer and the situation was getting worse. A second call to the Police Department clearly stating there were safety issues only to be told that no officer could be sent because of shift change.¬ Bravo to the Haverhill Police for going above and beyond. Great to see my tax dollars hard at work.
Census coming
In the mail yesterday I received a letter from the U.S. Census Bureau that said in about a week I will receive the 2010 Census form in the mail and that I should fill it out and mail it promptly. I wondered why there was a need to send a notification that the census was coming and how much taxpayer money was wasted mailing it to millions of people. Your tax dollars are at work in Washington.
Older drivers
There seems to be a lot of feedback from older drivers these days. What are you afraid of? I watched in horror as my 85-year-old aunt, who couldn't pass the eye test, get her licensed renewed. Maybe this is why those who shouldn't be driving still are? Stop putting your life and the lives of others in danger. Drunk drivers kill. Cell phones kill. And older drivers who can no longer see properly and react quickly enough kill. Let the vanity go and stop being afraid to admit you can no longer do it all.
Good service
With all the negativity floating around Sound Off and society in general, I would like to personally thank the City of Methuen's Engineering and Water and Sewer Department. I had an issue which I walked in off the street to discuss. I was taken care of immediately, and a crew was dispatched to help me with my problem. I found the workers and the entire department to be both courteous and professional. It's good to know my tax dollars are being well spent. Thank you.
Next job
Now that the mayor of Lawrence has new curtains and a floor, I hope they look at the licensing office that needs a new rug and ceiling in the back room. Has anyone ever seen it other than the poor girl in that office who has to work under those conditions? I know I surely wouldn't work in those dangerous conditions.
Brilliant observation
New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch recently made the following brilliant observation: "The lousy economy ... has a lot to do with the fact jobs weren't created." Well, duh!
Working for less
Another "Thank God you have a job and you should work for low pay, no benefits and long hours or I will take your job and work for less because of the economy" comment. People still need to pay their taxes, mortgages, car payments and children's education. I say get a fair day's pay for a fair day's work. Shame on you who work for less!
Pit bulls
I just read a headline which reads, "Temperamental pit bull kills owner." I cannot recall ever reading of another breed, outside of a Rottweiler, killing an owner. And though these stories pop up at least once every month or so, people are still allowed to own these two breeds. Until these breeds are wiped off this planet, laws should be placed where if one of these breeds harms someone the owner is arrested for assault or worse.
