---- — Education

I’d like to say something about education and the way some people who have master’s degrees and Ph.D.’s look down on those of us who don’t. Common sense and goodness cannot be taught; you either have it or you don’t. I have much respect for anyone who has furthered their education but because of simple economics many of us could not. Knowing how to deal with people, treating others with dignity and refraining from devious and sneaky methods by embarrassing others scores more points in this 70-year-old’s book.

I’m proud to say I finally registered to vote today. I’m embarrassed to say I have been living in Haverhill for 2 years and haven’t even voted. This is a shout out to Maura Ryan-Ciardiello for Haverhill School Committee. Thank you for taking the time to talk with me. She is awesome.

I have been a taxpayer in Methuen for 40-plus years. I am so tired of hearing the big crybabies complain regarding Jennifer Kannan’s family ties to the fire and police departments. God bless all of these heroes. Who do you think serves and protects us each and every day in 90-degree temperatures, and below-zero cold? And did you forget that these men and women have to take rigid mental and physical tests before they can enter either one of these honored positions. No one wants to pay higher taxes including myself and any policeman or firefighter. Seriously, wake up and smell the Starbucks!.

The Republicans are the ultimate hypocrites. They rant about the Democrats not wanting to “negotiate” to end the government shutdown when it was their total intransigence about defunding the Affordable Care Act that caused it in the first place. Their definition of “compromise” is actually total capitulation to their terms. George Orwell would be proud of their doublespeak.

No ideas

I heard Jennifer Kannan give her stump speech at the Senior Center on Saturday morning. I’m still cringing. I encourage all voters to check out her website. It’s apparent that she is not offering a single, new idea if she’s elected mayor of Methuen.

Legal bills

Sean Fountain and Jennifer Kannan just had to get rid of our city solicitor in Methuen because they couldn’t get along. Now they hire an outside law firm that charges $175 an hour because it’s supposed to save money. However, our legal bills have risen consistently every month since their “learning curve” has ended and they are charging us full price for every phone call or email they answer. Now we have another lawsuit pending against the city because of this council’s poor judgment that is going to send these legal bills through the roof. Is there any foresight on this council? Kannan and Fountain need to start thinking about what’s best for this city and stop using their positions to further their own personal agendas and using us as their favor factory.

No pay

The shutdown of many federal services and the nonpayment of salaries to furloughed federal employees should also include the executive and legislative branches which includes the president and his staff, the Senate and the Congress. Why should they receive their salaries, when they are all dysfunctional?
