Letter: Lawrence taxi rule restricts residents’ rights

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — To the editor:

Keith Eddings’s article “Andover hack busted for picking up in Lawrence”, introduces a controversy that will affect many residents of the city.

This ban on out-of-town taxis picking up in Lawrence opens the door for control over our right to do business with whom we please. Would it also be OK for the city to control what tow company you choose to call when you need their service? If cab companies in Lawrence are allowed to travel outside the city, then outside cab companies should be allowed to enter the city as well. The service between these cab companies can vary and a Lawrence resident should not be told where and with whom they can take rides.

Ultimately, allowing more options to residents can be only be beneficial. We all should have freedom over our own decisions. This new law also forces Lawrence residents who frequently use the services of Andover Central Transportation to forge new relationships with drivers from other companies. This particular issue is important and should not be ignored. Residents should not have to put their trust in cab companies that they may be unfamiliar with.

We all have the freedom to make our own decisions, and this is an inalienable right.
