Letter: Support Rivera for mayor of Lawrence

To the editor:

Lawrence’s rich history is a major part of the city’s identity, as it should be, and we celebrate this history in museums like Heritage State Park. But in placing such an emphasis on the past, few pose the question of what are we doing in the city today that anyone living 100 years from now would build a museum to honor? The answer is very little.

Lawrence is a place where people come from all over the world to transform their lives. Here is where the ladder of social mobility has begun for millions of Americans for decades. We live in a community that has been the living and breathing definition of hope for generations.

But that sense of hope has been overtaken by hopelessness, selfishness, incompetence and arrogance. This is not who we are.

Dan Rivera, a candidate for Lawrence mayor, has a vision and a plan to change the city’s direction to one I passionately support. He offers citizens a clear choice between hope and fear, between success and failure.

I respectfully ask my friends and neighbors to please join me and my family in voting for Dan this fall. Thank you.
