---- — To the editor:
It is impossible to keep guns out the hands of sick individuals who would use them to kill other humans.
It is possible, however, to invent “smart guns” that could not be fired on a human target.
A Positive Target Identification Device (PTID) could be installed on all guns sold to private citizens which would prevent them from firing on a human target.
This device might be a scope that not only amplifies the target but also identifies the target and relates this information back to the firing mechanism of the gun, locking the trigger when a human target is in the line of fire.
It would be a mandatory device for all guns sold to private citizens under strict penalties of the law.
Removal of this device, except by expert gunsmiths, would permanently render the gun inoperable. Only guns sold to law enforcement agencies would be unrestricted. Law enforcement agencies would have strict guidelines for their security and maintenance. The invention of this device would involve the collaboration of gun manufacturers and photography and barcoding experts.
It’s time to start thinking out of the box with ideas like this, even though we may ultimately deem them to be futile and without consequence.
