To the editor:
The more I know about Gail Sullivan, the more I am impressed. With 40 years of experience as a teacher, principal, curriculum director, assistant superintendent and superintendent, she is clearly up to the job of serving on the Haverhill School Committee. After many years as a school administrator, she has recently returned to her first love: teaching. She teaches reading at Northern Essex Community College and graduate courses in education at the University of New England.
Gail speaks with conviction about addressing big issues facing our schools. While Haverhill’s students are capable of doing well, some are not yet performing up to their potential. Gail has worked with teachers, students, parents and administrative teams to boost student achievement in her positions as a high school principal and assistant superintendent.
As an assistant superintendent, Gail was also instrumental in drafting a long-term maintenance and capital improvement plan that empowered the district to meet its long-term and short-term building and facility needs. Roofs age, eventually leak and need to be repaired or replaced. Heating systems break down and outlive their usefulness. Technology grows obsolete. The best school districts plan ahead while working to maintain what they have.
In these challenging times, it’s refreshing to see an exceptional candidate running for a seat on our School Committee. I encourage you to join me in voting for Gail Sullivan on Nov. 5. Children will always be her first priority.
