Letter: Zanni is right choice for mayor in Methuen

To the editor:

As a former educator, I have been excited to watch Mayor Steve Zanni work to move Methuen’s public schools in the right direction. While much is said about the job he has done leading the high school renovation project, I feel he has been an equally strong leader in enhancing our school system’s curriculum.

Mayor Zanni first ran for office emphasizing a strong school system. Himself a former teacher, it was an emphasis that was believable. Now as mayor, it is an emphasis that is supported by the mayor’s record of results.

By expanding foreign language courses into the elementary schools, Mayor Zanni has introduced younger students to important instruction that is made ever more vital by today’s global economy. Study after study shows the importance of beginning foreign language instruction at a young age. This important move by Mayor Zanni and the school administration will equip our students with necessary skills that will serve them well long after they leave Methuen schools.

By adding enrichment courses to the curriculum, Mayor Zanni has led the charge in creating opportunities for all students to be challenged in the classroom. This move signals that Methuen schools will never accept that the best has been achieved — but rather, that our students will remain challenged regardless of how advanced they are.

Our children are our future. That our mayor has recognized the importance of these young residents — and the importance of equipping them with the skills to compete in an ever-competitive world — is admirable. Mayor Zanni’s focus on results, and his commitment to our students, is why I’ll be voting to re-elect him as mayor.
