Letter: City needs to plan for building maintenance

(Continued)

I think we need to know the reality of the situation. I am sure that the total cost to take care of all of the issues our buildings have, is going to be a very high number. I think it’s time that our elected officials tell us straight out -- what needs to be done, when does it need to be done, how much is it going to cost and how much do we have set aside to do it?

The voters just passed a debt exclusion for Hunking School. We need to build a new school to replace the one that we have. Why? The city failed to maintain the building properly.

This city needs an actual, detailed maintenance plan for its buildings. If we allow our officials to continue to be negligent about building maintenance, then in another 15 years or even sooner, we will be back to the voting booth to replace another building that was left to rot. And if that happens, it won’t be the fault of our elected officials -- it will be our fault for failing to hold those officials accountable.
