Letter: Green investment will save city money

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — To the editor:

As a school committeewoman and former city councilor, my first priority has always been about providing top-notch services to Methuen taxpayers while saving them money. That is why I am urging the Methuen City Council to vote in favor of hiring Ameresco to start saving on our city’s energy costs.

Ameresco is a Massachusetts-based company that goes into communities to find greener, cleaner and cheaper options for energy. Ameresco officials came into Methuen and found 55 areas in school and city buildings where the city could be saving on energy. Ameresco promises that if the city borrows the $3.7 million needed to do the work, there where will be an $298,892 savings the first year which will cover the loan repayment. The energy savings in future years will continue to cover the loan payments.

The scope of the work provides other benefits as well. Suggested work at the city’s ice rink will extend the time is can be used. It gets other desperately needed work done at schools and city buildings that otherwise the city could not afford. Ameresco has performed similar work in Haverhill, North Andover, Lowell, Logan Airport, and others and they are all satisfied customers.

This is a no-brainer. It costs the taxpayers nothing. It makes our buildings more energy efficient and saves us money. It gets much-needed fixes done on our buildings. It makes the planet a little greener. I urge the Methuen City Council to sign an agreement with Ameresco when it comes up for a vote in August.

Thank you.
