Tort reform
A big problem with this country is all the frivolous lawsuits that take place from "shady" attorneys who will do anything for a buck. Citizens, corporate America as well as the insurance industry are paying out billions of dollars each year for "scam" lawsuits — not to mention billions of dollars of our tax money used for court expenses. This will never be corrected unless we stop voting for attorneys for public office. Lawyers have the biggest, yet most unnoticed, special interest group in America.
Leaving party
This old-time Democrat will be voting independent or Republican for now on! The Democratic Party used to be for the working class, but not anymore! It seems the Democratic Party attracts only "people who want something for nothing" and I am sick of it! The unions, welfare abusers, and all the other freeloaders of society love to vote Democrat. Why, so they can get something for nothing! I didn't leave the Democratic Party. They left me!
Grasping at straws
You have to love the way Republicans grasp at anything to criticize Democrats. The latest is going after Rep. Niki Tsongas for not commenting on the Islamic Center in Manhattan. She doesn't need to say anything because it isn't her job to do so. Her job is to focus on national policy and how it affects Massachusetts. The last time I checked, New York City is not in Massachusetts.
Back to books
I think I am going to save a lot of money on cable fees — by canceling it! TV stinks and is nothing but car and cell phone commercials anyway. I am going back to reading. Book rentals are free at the library!
Fed up
What is it with these politicians who have no trouble picking our pockets when they vote for new and higher taxes, but when it comes to paying their own taxes, they exempt themselves and term it an "oversight"? We taxpayers are really, really fed up with all of this "specialness" we are seeing from those bureaucrats and we are putting them on notice that we are watching and planning to deal with them come November!
Street paving
Regarding the paving of Howe Street: If you bothered to read that road sign at the Washington Street traffic light, you'd know that the Howe Street repaving was planned for the week before school started, but a four-day stretch of rain messed up those plans. The guys still had the paving done by the time school opened Wednesday.
About the money
To the caller "True fan": So Johnny Damon left Boston for the money and not "the love of the game"? It amazes me that Boston fans think players should take a discount to play here. Stop being so clueless. These players aren't from Boston and could care less. It is all about the money. Also Red Sox TV ratings are down over 30 percent this year so your silly comment about Boston fans being the "true fans" wasn't well researched.
Firefighters
I just read in The Eagle-Tribune that five firefighters have been charged with setting fires in western Massachusetts. There are many people who have raised the possibility of firefighter involvement with the rash of fires that have occurred in Lawrence lately. It's certainly not beyond belief. According to the state Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan, "Firefighters as arsonists are not as uncommon as they should be." I realize they have a suspect in custody for some of those fires in Lawrence. But to not at least bring up the possibility of firefighter involvement would be remiss on all of our parts.
