Letter: Predictions of Obamacare doom fall flat

To the editor:

Nightmare! Horror show! Train wreck! Disaster! Castastrophe! A rolling calamity that must be stopped! The Republican propaganda about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is reminiscent of the regularly scheduled predictions of the apocalypse by confused individuals and con men throughout history.

The oldest known prediction of the end of the world is recorded on Assyrian tablets in the 26th century BCE: “Our Earth is degenerate in these later days; there are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end; bribery and corruption are common; children no longer obey their parents; every man wants to write a book and the end of the world is evidently approaching.”

Despite the dire predictions, the technical challenges of the open enrollment period, and some needed adjustments, ACA is going on and it is working. Millions of Americans who could not afford health insurance are now covered. And they don’t have to worry about pre-existing conditions or life time limits or being charged more because of being a woman.

Yes, even if children don’t always obey their parents, or if Republicans continue to tell lies, or if the ACA makes health security and peace of mind affordable for millions of people, the world does not seem to end. When will we figure that out, stop living in fear and allow common sense to prevail?
