I just read the mayor of Haverhill’s rosy financial picture. The new budget calls for levying property taxes $100,000 under the maximum allowed by Proposition 2 1/2. Oh wait a minute, this is after the state is willing to donate $2.4 million towards the Hale debt. Oh wait, this is before considering the $300 million unfunded liability for health care for future retirees. Oh wait, this is before the $30 million needed to repair the storm water sewer systems. Oh wait, this is before the city spends money to repair the downtown flood wall. Oh wait, this is before capping the old landfill. Oh wait, this is before building a new Hunking School. What a rosy picture! You really expect the citizens of Haverhill to approve an override for a new school that could and should be built for less than the $64 million projected cost? I think not.
