To the editor:
This letter is a caution to those who drive open-bed pickup trucks. Please make sure that the contents of the bed are secured.
On Saturday, June 1, around 11:30 am, I was driving in the fast lane on Route 213 in Methuen heading west about two car lengths behind a red pickup truck. That truck lost a large garbage barrel from its bed that bounced into the middle of my lane, then bounced left against the guardrail and for some inexplicable reason remained there instead of bouncing back into my SUV.
In the SUV were my two youngest grandchildren, ages 2 and 5. Ever since this incident, I have pondered the carelessness of that driver and hope this letter will spark other drivers to secure their loads so a needless tragedy will not occur. We were blessed that day, but others might not be so lucky.
