Letter: Romney disrespects veterans and elderly

To the editor:

Mitt Romney deeply offended all who serve in the military when he characterized us as freeloaders because soldiers don’t pay federal income taxes on their soldier’s pay.

FYI, Mr. Romney, I’m a white male who served in our military during the Korean War. After my military service, I created a small company devoted to inventions. My company holds patents, and I earned my living from my inventions. I supported my family and brought up two sons who are successful, despite the downturn in the global economy.

Now with new technology introduced that supplanted my innovations, I’m retired at age 72 and draw on Social Security and Medicare. I paid into these programs throughout all my working life.

So, yes, Mr. Romney, I am entitled — to the benefits I paid in to and that I worked hard for over many decades. I’m entitled not because I’m rich like you are. I don’t have your write-offs on investments, nor the huge write-offs of your backers, the big corporations and big oil companies that fund your campaign.

I’m elderly, and I’m not rich like you are with multiple tax loopholes. However, I am proud to be an American vet, having run a successful small business and instilled in my sons the importance of a true work ethic.

So count me in that 47 percent who will never vote for you, Mr. Romney, not after you disrespected veterans and the elderly.
