---- — Applebee’s BA
You ask in Sunday’s editorial if the cost of college is worth it. I am retired now, but a year ago, a co-worker of mine at the Post Office told me his daughter was graduating from UMass with a degree in English literature and that she hoped to find work in public relations. Six months later, I asked him how his daughter was doing, and he told me that she was working as a waitress at Applebee’s. I will let you draw your own conclusions. But, on the other hand, people I know who have degrees in accounting, engineering and nursing have no trouble finding work.
I want to thank the two women who paid our food bill at Denny’s on July 4, You are part of our human race that’s trying to make this world a better place with kindness. Thank you and may God bless you both.
Pick your noise
Wow! Will you people listen to yourselves? Bickering comments bantering back and forth about the screeches of children, overgrown grass, lawnmower noise. I totally agree and I’m sure my friends and family think it was me that sent in those comments. I have the same daily complaints. But how petty are people? It’s summer. Windows are open. We have neighbors close by who are living their lives. Yes, children do not know how to laugh anymore. Everything has to be exciting and overboard. That is what they learn from their parents. I watched my neighbors force their daughter on a jungle gym they built while she sat there crying, afraid of it. We are brainwashed by marketing racketeers to think we must be partying on the weekends and holidays. Face it. This is society today. And if you have fallen prey to brainwashing then you have no one to blame but yourselves.
But please! Be quiet about it. Some of us still enjoy peace and tranquility and it does not mean we are elderly.
Can someone please explain to me in what world an 11 percent pay raise is considered a “cost-of-living” adjustment? What is going on in the town of Methuen? Is it me? Is ANYONE getting 11 percent raises these days? Sure! Right here in the town of Methuen! Is anyone watching the till?
To the writer who said as a libertarian, she could not vote in the primary: You certainly CAN vote in the primary, if there are Libertarian candidates running against each other. But you can see why voting for a third-party candidate is a waste.
To all the commenters about noise: There is a law and it says that we are to be quiet between the hours of 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. It is called a noise ordinance. Obey it, young and old. Think about your neighbor, not yourself.
What Supremes do
Just to clarify another Sound Off comment: The Supreme Court did not override the will of the people. The Supreme Court’s job is to decide what is constitutional and what is not. Its decisions are not required to be political or popular, only to render an opinion on constitutionality. The will of the people is for the ballot box, when you elect politicians. The politicians make the laws, and the Supreme Court judges their constitutionality.
