---- — No easy life

When you see me using my EBT card, please do not make assumptions. I am someone who was born with a physical disability, led a normal, working life until four years ago. I was laid off and my disability has gotten much worse as I am older. I put into the system for 36 years and 21 years of those years I worked one to two jobs trying hard to having the American dream. I am only able to work part-time I have been told by Mass. Rehab and even that would be very difficult. I volunteer but because of my limited income had to give up my car, have no cable, gave up my cellphone but do have house phone and Internet. I recently got a Safelink phone — a free phone which has not many minutes at all. I have no free cable or house phone. I do get help with fuel assistance but qualified for that when I was working. I am on a waiting list for housing but in the mean time still must pay my rent. I get no help for nonfood items such as toilet paper, deodorant, soap, dish soap, laundry soap, toothpaste, etc. I have to prove approximately every three to four months that I am still eligible for this help. If you think my life is a free ride and easy for me it is not. I am embarrassed to use my EBT card at a grocery store as usually a cashier will talk very loudly, saying, “Oh, you have an EBT card.”

Poor decision

I can’t believe the Methuen City Council cut the health director position without even considering the impact on so many communities. Shame, shame. Sad that we all have to suffer for their stupid decisions.

Traffic light

I saw the Sound Off item about the traffic light on Route 125 in front of the Bradford fire station. As of Sunday morning it was not flashing. The light is needed because drivers on Route 125 go beyond the speed limit and ignore the cars on Laurel Avenue. Cars cannot get on Route 125 from Laurel Avenue because of the speeding. Maybe if they got a $100 ticket they would slow down.

Were warned

Great job, Methuen City Council, in losing the state regional health grant! The representative from the state warned you that you would lose the grant if you didn’t reconsider the Health Director’s position. You were rude to her and treated her and others who spoke out against the Health Department cuts like garbage. Well low and behold, she was correct and the grant that would have helped three communities for three years is gone! I won’t be voting for any incumbents this year!

Syria

How many of us remember that during the presidential debates Syria was noted as a top danger zone on Mitt Romney’s well-focused list? Liberal responses to this were of ridicule toward him at the time. Those who actually listened and paid attention to the signs in Syria do remember. How many times do we have to say, “What difference does it make.”
