Letter: Gonzalez is best choice for mayor of Lawrence

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — To the editor:

I am supporting Juan “Manny” Gonzalez for mayor because he is the “whole package.”

Manny, like thousands of other Lawrencians, came to Lawrence with very little to pursue the American dream. He graduated from Lawrence High School and worked his way to success while he pursued his education, starting at a Lawrence company making just over $3 an hour. His hard work paid off, and after working for several area businesses, Manny became a Lawrence firefighter. He and his wife, Gloribel, have raised three wonderful children here, instilling in them the importance of education, hard work, and caring for others. Manny understands firsthand the challenges facing our families when it comes to employment, education, our quality of life.

I firmly believe that Manny is the most qualified person to serve as our mayor based on his diverse life experiences, and his proven service to our city and her citizens. He is a selfless man of integrity, devoid of connections to the past four years of poor public policy decisions at City Hall. Manny would never have supported the devastating cuts to public safety and other essential government services that have devastated our city over the last four years.

Our families deserve to be safe, and Manny is the candidate who will make public safety the utmost priority as mayor of Lawrence. Manny understands from his professional experience working with our fire and police departments the importance of not only keeping all Lawrencians safe, but also making Lawrence a city where businesses will want to locate. Manny knows that we need to attract businesses that will provide jobs for our residents and provide much needed tax revenue.

I also believe that Manny has the temperament best suited for the office of mayor in Lawrence. Though he has proven his leadership in our community, he would consult city councilors, academics and community leaders alike when making decisions. Manny has demonstrated his ability to work well with others, always treating them with respect, listening to their opinions, and understanding that we all have a role to play in making Lawrence a better place to live, work, and raise a family. He will bring a much needed change in tone to City Hall.

As a homeowner, husband and father of two children, my family deserves to be safe, we deserve a better city — we need Manny as out next mayor.

Manny will bring integrity, professionalism and honor to our city, and work together with us to lead us to a brighter future.
