To the editor:
With Methuen’s mayor only elected to serve two years before being forced to run again, it’s any wonder how our city’s elected leaders can accomplish much in such a politicized environment. Indeed, Mayor Stephen Zanni hadn’t even served a full year before ambitious individuals began throwing their name around as potential candidates. Yes, politics is a part of the democratic process, but our residents have an expectation that — especially once elected — our officials can set aside politics and achieve real results for our city. It is with this feeling in mind that I intend to re-elect Mayor Zanni.
As our mayor, Steve Zanni has shown residents that he is not the typical, back-slapping politician. Instead, Mayor Zanni has stood out as a leader who has a focus on tackling problems, fighting for taxpayers, and offering solutions.
Mayor Zanni was proactive in presenting cost-saving measures, including successfully privatizing the cleaning services at City Hall. This simple change saved taxpayers $100,000 a year. Mayor Zanni made another great proposal to privatize the city’s IT Department, which would have saved $1 million over four years and would have actually increased efficiencies. When the City Council raised concerns about this change, Mayor Zanni went back to the drawing board and included councilors in every step of the process.
Mayor Zanni’s commitment to savings without sacrificing services is a hallmark of his administration. This includes Mayor Zanni negotiating an employee health insurance plan which maintained coverage, but saved the city $1 million a year!
It is refreshing to have a mayor in Methuen who has shown such a commitment to producing results for us residents. And with political bickering being all-too-common even in local politics, it has been a pleasure watching a gentleman like Mayor Zanni lead our city. As voters across Methuen consider who they will be voting for in November, I encourage you to cast your vote for the candidate with a proven record of producing results — Mayor Zanni!
