Ceferina Williams, of Lawrence, who, with her husband, Juan, and 93-year-old father survived a home invasion by two men Wednesday night, one of them brandishing a pistol. Juan Williams is associate pastor of the God of the Prophecy Church. Police believe the two men were looking for drugs and money, and broke into the wrong apartment.

"Be assured that if you drink and you drive this weekend, we will be out in force looking for you."

State police spokesman David Procopio, warning that the police will be conducting sobriety checkpoints in the region over the weekend.

Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua, in a rare appearance before the City Council, angrily denouncing a proposal to eliminate the deputy chief position in the Police Department. Lantigua wants to make his political ally, acting Deputy Chief Melix Bonilla, the permanent deputy.

"You may not eradicate (prostitution) entirely, but we tend to make it unpleasant for people who want to ply their trade and for the johns who get arrested."

Haverhill police Sgt. John Arahovites, after a prostitution sting resulted in three arrests, including one man who police said was illegally keeping a loaded pistol in his car.

"I drank beers and drove. I never smoked grass. I never smoked marijuana."

Jon Golnik, of Carlisle, one of four Republican candidates seeking to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas in the Fifth Congressional District, on his arrest in 2001 and charges of operating under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The drug charge was dropped soon after the arrest, and Golnik admitted to sufficient facts on the drunken-driving charge.

"It's an opportunity to be more responsive to students along the way."

Timberlane Regional High School Principal Donald Woodworth, on a decision to eliminate

midterm and final exams. Woodworth said the change would add eight instructional days to every school year, and that assessments would be more continuous and effective.

"No payment plan has been established yet. It's an ongoing process."

Leonard Degnan, chief of staff to Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua, on the city's efforts to collect back taxes from the city's biggest tax delinquent, the Merrimac Paper Co., which owes $2.67 million in unpaid taxes, water and sewer bills. The city is owed a total of $25 million in back taxes, according to financial overseer Bob Nunes.
