The holidays are here. We need to put aside our differences bow our heads and thank God for all His blessings. This is the time of year for all to be kind, generous in many ways and smile a great big smile. This should be done not only throughout the holidays but all year long. We are all very fortunate to be living in a free country, I know some of you beg to differ. If you see someone in the cold, working and hovering over a warm fire, buy that person something to eat or a hot drink. I know some of you cannot afford it but most of you can. Happy Thanksgiving and Hanukkah to all. Blessings to everyone.
Let me see if I have this right: First we stop teaching children phonics and tell them to write the words the way it sounds to them. Then when they get into fourth grade or so, we take off points for their writing because they are not spelling the words right. Then we complain about how children are not passing tests because they cannot read. Now we are going to do away with cursive writing because we have computersand all the children need to know is how to print. Oh, and we also have spell-check on the computers to help them spell correctly. How the heck will they even know if the word on spell check is the one they want to use? They have no idea how it should even look because they have no phonics background! Parents, take a stand and let the education department know you want your child to learn to think without the machines! Put phonics back in the schools. Keep the old way while incorporating the new. It works!
Another Sound Off writer that said we are losing our freedom. In an age where we now have about 110 percent freedom and just about anything goes, if you write a list down of what we have lost I will double it for what we have gained. We have people now doing things that you couldn’t get a way with years ago. Years back, if you got caught driving drunk you wouldn’t drive again for a very long time. Now alcoholics have several citations against them and still get caught again. Movies used to be controlled and so we had only good ones. Now, we have all kinds of violence and sex thrown in reminding us how low we can get.
That Sound Off submission about bad drivers is a frustration many of us law-abiding drivers feel. I am out in traffic about eight hours a day and I am so sick and tired of seeing many traffic infractions done in the presence of a police officer in a parked cruiser. Too many police officers are lazy; that’s the problem. Taxpayers pay their salary and expect our traffic laws to be enforced. Try doing your job to the full extent of it! You are not doing society any justice by not caring. It has become dangerous to drive with many drivers thinking anything goes today.
