After-school program
I'm a resident of Methuen and I'm reading your front page article, "After-school program is called waste." My granddaughter goes to that program. She's an A student. She tells me she does her homework there and she plays, so yes, it is a waste. According to the paper, it's for children who are struggling academically. My granddaughter is in seventh grade, she's an A student, and has never struggled academically. I would like to know why children, like my granddaughter, are going to this program if it's a waste of this money? She doesn't need this program. Do they not check what children need this?
Money for bigwigs
I'm calling regarding the front page article about Methuen's after-school program being a waste. I don't think it's fair that those people get top dollar for what they're doing. I think it should go to the teachers who are in this program, devoting their time and energy to these students. My daughter has been in this program for three years. I've seen the dedication and hard work they do. If anything, they deserve an increase in pay as opposed to these bigwigs getting it and not doing anything for it. Without these teachers running this program, it would not be a success. My daughter has benefited immensely and I am ever grateful for all of the help these teachers have given her.
Egg wars
I would just like to say that the Haverhill police did not thwart the egg wars. My house was hit several times. I'm very disappointed in them.
Kids roaming
I really think it's ridiculous that you guys said the egg wars were thwarted by the police. If you guys had been there that night, there were hundreds of kids roaming around.
Stores open
I live in Massachusetts, but I shop in New Hampshire. I don't only shop there because it's tax free, I shop there because the stores are open! I tried shopping at a Haverhill store on Saturday only to find that the business was not open. If you wonder why people don't shop in their own town, it's because the stores are closed.
Lights on
If it's not a law, then it should be a law that if it's raining or snowing or even gloomy, then headlights should be on, on all vehicles when traveling. It's really hard to see other cars during a heavy rain or if they're on the highway.
More freedom
All the people that write that we are losing our freedom I wish they would give us a list of what freedoms we are losing. The way I see it we have more freedom now than we ever had in the history of this country. We have so much freedom now to do just about everything we want, people are now doing things that fifty years ago they would be arrested for. Why is the one freedom we did lose and that is to walk the streets after dark nobody mentions that. Are we in denial?
Drug prices
To all pharmacies: Please help fight the manufacturers on pricing prescriptions. Retired people can't take it any longer. I just purchased two prescriptions at almost $900 for 90 days each. How much longer can we do this? Someone is getting rich on us elderly. Why doesn't the government go after them?
Health care
The Democrats censured Congressman Joe Wilson for calling Obama a liar when Obama said the health care reform bill would not cover illegal aliens. Now that the bill specifically does cover illegal aliens, let's wait and see if they'll apologize to Wilson. Don't hold your breath!
