Our view: Santa Fund needs your help

The Eagle-Tribune Santa Fund this week launches its 84th fundraising campaign, and it's likely to be one of the toughest ever.

The economy remains stagnant, though there are signs of hope. Unemployment has hit double digits and the job market is likely to take longer to rebound than the economy as a whole.

Many of those who do have jobs are wary of the future and many have been asked to take pay cuts or work fewer hours.

Some who have given in the past may now be seeking help themselves.

The Salvation Army is already seeing more families looking for assistance, which comes in the form of vouchers for food, clothing and toys. To make sure your donations go to those most in need, the Salvation Army is interviewing applicants in person so it knows first-hand just how tough the times are.

The residents of the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire are extraordinarily generous and have reached deep through good times and bad to help Santa.

Over its history, the fund has raised close to $6 million. Last year, readers donated more than $159,000, enough to make the holidays a little brighter for more than 1,000 families, including 2,400 children.

We're counting on you again to give what you can.
