Sound Off

Thanks for care

Last week my wife was brought to the emergency room of Lawrence General Hospital with possible strokes or TIAs. She was later admitted. I would like to congratulate Diane Anderson, president and CEO, for her leadership and positive changes made at this hospital. From the ER receptionist to all the nurses, attendants, technicians and doctors, it was very obvious to observe the kindness and compassion given to my wife. I would classify the care as excellent throughout the hospital.

Merry what?

To "Bickering," maybe in addition to your lack of concern about how many Americans feel about the state of our country, you also meant to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas.

Clean house

While conservative, liberal, Republican, and Democrat voters are arguing with each other over who is right and who is wrong, while we are all distracted by these conflicts our country's leaders, members of all parties and persuasions, are working their back-room deals and slowly but surely destroying the country I grew up in and want desperately to preserve for my grandchildren. It's time to clean all of our Washington houses.

Please recycle

I live in Bradford and started single-stream recycling when it was rolled out. My regular trash has been decreased by two thirds. That's a significant amount of reduced waste that goes into landfills or burned. My recycling bin is overflowing at the end of two weeks. I feel like I'm doing my part to have an effect on conservation. I noticed on recycling week, only about half the people are recycling. Recycling, whatever system is used, is the right thing to do for our environment and for our children's future. So everyone, please recycle. It will make you feel good.

Stick to GPS

Gee, why would morale be low in the Haverhill fire department just for installing GPS in the vehicles ... unless maybe somebody is somewhere they shouldn't be? And another thing, if your morale is so low, go find another job you enjoy. There are plenty of people who are out of work who would love to have your jobs whether there's a GPS in the vehicle or not. Hang tough, Mayor. You were elected to save taxpayers' money, and if GPSs save money, then stick to your guns

Travesty

Why is $9 million in taxpayer money going to pay for a footbridge at Gillette Stadium? The Kraft family, owners of the Patriots, are billionaires. At the very least, they should be loaned the money on condition of paying it back. To just grant them the money is a travesty and another waste of so-called federal stimulus money. You wonder who the Krafts paid off.

Obamacare for Congress

If by chance Obama's health care plan passes, we the people should demand that Congress be required to be enrolled under that same plan and no other. Senators and congressmen are elected by their constituents. Unfortunately our representatives in Washington act as if they are somehow better and deserving of much more than the people they supposedly represent.

No GPS

Having GPS units in fire vehicles is an expense that should never be. Not only do they cost a lot of taxpayer money, but monitoring the units is also another cost. In this time of cost cutting, installing and monitoring is totally ridiculous, in addition to harassing our firefighters who put their lives on line in time of need. So what if sometimes a vehicle is used to run an errand while on duty? If vehicles sit around without use they become susceptible to problems that would make them non usable in an emergency situation. I say "No" to GPS and hope the mayor will follow suit.

Massachusetts residents who turn 18 on or before December 8, 2009 are eligible to vote in the special state primary election held to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Kennedy, but only if they register to vote by Wednesday, Nov. 18.
