To the editor:

I read the articles by B. Kirk and J. Jorgensen on "holiday shopping" and I was confused as to which "holiday" they were referring. Hmmm, was it Thanksgiving? No, presents aren't typically exchanged for Thanksgiving.

Oh, so it must have been Christmas. Well, if it was "Christmas," then why didn't they say so? Oh, that is right, it might offend someone. Well, I am a Christian and it "offends" me when I hear "Happy Holidays" or "Holiday Tree."

It is this "political correctness" that just resulted in the murder of 13 individuals and one unborn at Fort Hood. So, Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year to you all!

Editorial: Adams' silence on donations speaks volumes

In declining to answer questions he finds uncomfortable, state Rep. Paul Adams is following in the footsteps of his political patron, Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua.
Lantigua, who delivered Lawrence votes that helped the Andover Republican win his 17th Essex District seat, simply refuses to respond to questions he does not like. So, too, Adams offers nothing but silence in response to the many questions surrounding contributions to his political campaign.

Letter: Housing director is doing nothing wrong

To the editor:
Ken Martin, the director of the Methuen Housing Authority, has been the recipient of malicious and politically-motivated attacks over the last few months.
Martin serves as director of both the Methuen Housing Authority (a full-time position) and the Ayer Housing Authority (a part-time job). In addition, Martin serves as chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Dracut Housing Authority (a non-paid, part-time job that he has been elected to by Dracut residents for the past 25 years).

Letter: Time is not right for contract increases

To the editor:
I found Shawn Patten's letter on Salem union contracts (Feb. 7) at odds with the real picture. I am sure he is just trying to do his job, but he has presented a rather myopic view. I suspect I feel like most of Salem relative to the belief that the vast majority of government workers are hard working, decent folks trying to do the best job they can. I am particularly respectful of first responders and teachers. But that is not at issue here.
