Sound Off

Parking deck

I have a solution for the Haverhill parking deck. Demolition crews should work round the clock to obliterate that crumbling monstrosity. It should be replaced by clothing stores, shoe stores, bowling alleys and maybe a movie theater, kind of like the way it was 40 years ago. At the same time the Woolworth building could be converted into a parking facility. That would be better than having trees grow on its roof.

Littering

There is an interesting phenomenon happening on the streets everywhere. I find trash in the form of fast food wrappers, beer bottles, coffee cups, etc., on deposited on the side of roads. And I am talking about my hoity-toity town as well. My neighbor told me he saw a professional looking individual in a sporty car slow down in front of his home and toss an empty pizza box out the window! Do we need to start broadcasting "Please Don't Be A Litter Bug" commercials again? Folks, please be considerate and place your trash in proper receptacles.

Great care

My family and I wish to express our appreciation for the excellent care my husband received as a patient at Merrimack Valley Hospital 4-East. The whole staff was wonderful, professional and caring.

Cable woes

What the article on Haverhill Comcast service doesn't mention is the new boxes we must connect to our TVs. It is hard for consumers who are not technically savvy to connect these boxes correctly. We cannot tape shows on VCRs anymore. We are now supposed to get HBO but it's not on there yet. The only new channel of value is Hallmark.

Labels

A taxpayer is "one that pays or is liable for a tax." Everytime some one makes a purchase in a store, buys gas or even fast food they pay a tax. Renters pay for a portion of their landlords' real estate tax. Are we not all taxpayers? So why do people always say "I'm a taxpayer" as if to distinguish themselves from everyone else? Why don't we just drop the labels? Aren't we all going through a rough time? Aren't we all dissatisfied with one thing or another? Why can't we all just call ourselves people who are doing the best we can with what we have.

Risky business

Why should banks lend money to small business when they can borrow money from the government at a zero interest rate and for instance, invest in another currency that is appreciating versus the dollar or go gambling with it? If they the lose the bet the government backstops their bad gambles anyway. Small business loans require a lot of paperwork, analysis and the rewards can be small or a total loss.

Abortion

We wish the church was as vigorous fighting against children having babies as it is against abortion. When we were their age it was a constant reminder to keep ourselves pure because it was a sin to have sex outside of marriage. When have we heard the word sin in church for the past few years? Of course abortion is bad but it is also bad to have babies just for the sake of having babies when they are not going to be supported and most will end up on welfare.

Nice work

Oh, please, please let me work on Beacon Hill where I can set my own ridiculously high salary, and then take six, paid weeks off during the holidays, leaving behind a bucket full of unresolved issues. Please let me work there.
