Sound Off

Making allies

Bravo to President Obama for his visit to the Far East. He is working to build a strong relationship with countries who can help us pressure North Korea and Iran. He is also working to improve the global economy, building ties that will help U.S. companies grow and ultimately create new jobs for Americans. China is quickly becoming a major world power. To ignore them would be a huge mistake, to alienate them would be an even bigger mistake. I'm proud to have a president who makes allies rather than enemies of other nations.

Buying supplies

To the person from Methuen complaining about the School Committee saying teachers buy their own supplies: I can tell you that's true because I complain to my wife all the time about doing just that. My parents always had to buy my notebooks, pencils, crayons, and whatever when I was a kid and we did the same for ours. You say you're spending a small fortune on these supplies. Isn't your child's education worth a few dollars?

Self promoting

I see once again the self promoting firefighters and police are holding award banquets to honoring their union brothers for savings people's lives and once again The Eagle-Tribune covers the event. Maybe the newspaper should place a reporter and photographer at every hospital in the Valley. Doctors and nurses are saving lives every day as part of their job description, too. But they don't hold banquets and invite the media.

Fire trucks

This is in response to the caller "At risk" in Saturday's paper. Most likely that fire truck was responding to a call and was called off. Fire trucks do not put on their lights, blare their horn and drive fast to get out of traffic! If you moved to the side for an on coming fire truck, how does that put you at risk?

Piling debt

There are over 440 phantom cities in this country that are receiving millions of dollars in stimulus money. One is even in New Hampshire. Where is the outrage in this country over what is going on in this administration. Senators are being paid for their votes on health care reform to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, while sending this country deeper and deeper in debt. The brunt of this debt will be put on the shoulders of our children and grandchildren. Rationing health care is already beginning with mammograms and pap smears. The people of this country need to wake up and pay attention to what is happening here.

Bush is out

Hey Mike Capuano: Are we still running against Bush? I thought that he was already out of the running. Where are you? Still in the past. Bush is not in the running. Leave him out of your ads. He has taken quite enough of the Democrats' putdowns. He's now a civilian. Treat him as such.

Try the Unitarians

I have some advice for Patrick Kennedy. If he doesn't like the beliefs of the Catholic faith, then just leave. What it comes down to is this: It's not about what man believes but what God says is truth. Last time I checked the Kennedys are not above the Lord and the Bible. Try the Unitarian Universalists. They are very accepting of your views.

Missing band

Congratulations to the VFW for another great Santa parade in Haverhill! However, how frustrating that the City of Haverhill no longer has a marching high school band to represent it. I wonder how Salem, Beverly, Londonderry, Methuen, etc. are able to fund the great bands that they had for this parade? How sad for our Haverhill students.
