Sound Off

Ban robo-calls

I am on the state no-call list and yet I am harassed by political robo-calls every recent election. Why are these calls exempt from the no-call list? I wish a local politician would have the courage to introduce legislation to ban these calls. Then for once a law would actually directly improve most citizens' lives by eliminating these harassing calls.

Unbelievable

Regarding the money allegedly stolen by the worker in the probation department, I cannot see how that much money could be overlooked for such a long time. More than $2 million — that's unbelievable. They said that amounted to about $12,000 a week. Someone was looking the other way for too long. Her books should have been looked at more often by someone above her to catch what was going on. That much money missing should have been picked up a lot sooner.

Ignore it

I was just listening to a mother talking about the Chelmsford school that will not allow Christmas items in the store and she said she wholeheartedly agrees. Well to you and everyone else who wants to take the "Christ" out of Christmas, you and your family should just ignore the whole day. Ask your employer, if you are not on the system, to work. Tell your kids, friends, and loved ones that this is just another day for them and it means nothing and that they should treat it that way also. No gifts, no visiting relatives, no big dinners. Stay home with your miserable self and let the rest of us who believe in the meaning of Christmas celebrate it for what it is.

Apologize

The hurtful acts of the young man who wrote the online book besmirching the characters of his classmates is an unfortunate event which calls to mind again the need for anti-bullying legislation. Criminality has been ruled out. Civil actions might be contemplated by some I could guess. My remedy: Nobody reading this has not made mistakes in judgment in their lives, certainly as a teen. Therefore I suggest he write letters of apology to everyone mentioned to help along his rehabilitation and help assure those offended.

A waste

Can anyone tell me why they are paying a person in Salem, N.H. overtime for 40 hours a week to fill the groundskeeper's position, rather than using a substitute for it? It seems like a huge waste of money to me. Also, I thought employees were not supposed to take the town vehicles home, but I see the school's maintenance truck at someone's house regularly. Hmm — makes you wonder who's playing favorites, doesn't it?

Read the map

Seems to me I remember learning in driver's ed 30 years ago that it is unsafe (and illegal) to change lanes in the middle of an intersection, yet I see it all the time on my way from Market Basket on South Broadway in Salem to Mall Road. It's not the kids or the elderly either, it's the thirtysomethings, talking on their cell phones and checking their GPS for directions. Perhaps we should require a driver's test every time you renew your license, and it should include map reading.

Vandalism

I want to make the residents of Crescent Farms Development in Bradford aware of the vandalism in their neighborhood. It started during the summer with harmless doorbell ringing, but has now escalated to vandalizing property. The police know that the culprits live in the neighborhood but have been unsuccessful in finding them. The incidents have mostly been on Friday and Saturday nights, but also on a Sunday night before a school holiday.

Trash

For the person who was disappointed in the music they played at the music awards. Sir, you must understand that anyone 65 or younger has been listening to this trash all their life so this is all they know. It would take Gershwin, Berlin, Cole Porter and others days, even weeks, to write a successful song. Now they do it in hours, without the ability to read music. How can you write music if you can't read music? Don't feel bad. I studied music and had friends who were professional musicians. How bad must they feel? It really is now like a cult. Kids 7 and 8 who would never think of music before are now into it. Really it is like a cancer — it has spread all over the world and is nowhere near subsiding.
