My family and I really enjoyed the Methuen tree lighting. The singing, cookies, hot cocoa and Santa all made for a nice evening for us. Good job to Mayor Zanni and the library. I hope Methuen does more family things like this.
What a shame that Mayor Zanni had Methuen lit up in all-white lights instead of multicolored for Christmas. Not everyone likes all-white lights. All-white everywhere is so boring.
The firing of two teachers from Lawrence Catholic Academy was badly handled by both the school and the church. The teachers offered to resign, and they should have been allowed to do that. If they were willing to resign, why fire them? What purpose did that serve? It only shows the school and church to be insensitive and hard-fisted.
Another lesson in religious hypocrisy from Lawrence Catholic Academy. If only those teachers had been treated like priests, they would have just been moved to a different school. Except in their case, they would have continued their excellent work educating young children, rather than abusing them.
Father O’Brien and Principal Hernandez should be ashamed of themselves thinking they are bettering their students’ lives by firing Natalie Ferland and Sean Houlihan for an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. They aren’t sending the students the message of God. They are sending them the message that when someone is in need of help and assistance, the proper thing to do is throw them out. I attended 12 years of Catholic school. I was raised to help people, care about people, and most importantly to love and respect them. The school may have helped itself by terminating their jobs, but it has, both directly and indirectly, hurt many more people than it has helped. A new life is something to be celebrated, not shamed. It’s very sad that the school lied to parents and students about why they left. Maybe they should focus more on supervising academics, because I believe their judgement has earned a “Needs Improvement.”
