It never ends — another Sound Off complaining about the people collecting unemployment, Social Security, etc., that most have a right to. This all together is beer money or chump change compared to the budget. Whether you like it or not, the only place there is that kind of money to help or stimulate the economy is in the 1 percent that own it all. Why is that so hard to understand? What is it about all these Sound Offs from people who are just getting by taking the side of the one-percenters? They got where they are because of their ability. They certainly do not need help from the sidelines.
To the opponents of a casino: You have the facts all wrong. You stated that a casino at Rockingham Park in Salem would increase crime, bring in prostitutes and drug dealers and would create gambling addictions among many people especially poor people who cannot afford to gamble. Wrong! Open your eyes — New Hampshire has had lotteries for many years. We have had a poker room at the track for over 6 years with no problems! How many have become addicted to the point of losing their homes? I was a dealer at the Rock and the players that I saw did not seem to be addicted or in dire financial straits. As far a crime is concerned, even the Salem police chief stated that there is no increase in crime. You must realize that the $80 million Gov. Hassan already has in her budget is a big score for the state and the annual income would be a fabulous amount to benefit all residents. With New Hampshire in big financial trouble, a casino at Rockingham Park is the answer. Do you have a better one?
I thought today’s modern woman has evolved into a strong, independent-thinking, take-charge women of power? So why is daytime TV still aimed at the shallow June Cleavers? Daytime talk shows are all about cooking, cleaning gadgets, make-up, anti-aging, child-bearing and fashion.
Ironic that The Eagle-Tribune prints a story about complaints against Lawrence taxis at the same time a new city law goes into effect “protecting” those same cab companies from competition. Where does the City Council get off thinking that they can prohibit competition from picking up a fare in Lawrence? Lawrence cabbies are some the worst. They are rude, inconsiderate and drive aggressively, cutting drivers off and incessantly blowing their horns, violating another city ordinance. Wake up, councilors.
The rampaging Texas student who stabbed and wounded 14 people will undoubtedly be used by some in an attempt to ridicule sensible gun control legislation. “Let’s do background checks on knife purchases,” they will say sarcastically. Intentionally or not, they miss the point. If that attacker had been wielding an automatic rifle, or even a handgun, those 14 victims would not be recovering in a hospital or at home. Most of them would be in the morgue. That’s why we need to do everything possible to keep guns away from those who shouldn’t have them.
