Culture of violence diminishes respect for life

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — To the editor:

Like many of you, I was sickened and profoundly affected by these senseless killings in Newtown, Conn.

Our president says, “Are we doing enough ?” Well, I wish to comment on that.

Who are the “we” he speaks of ? Certainly not the good people of Newtown, whom he was addressing. Certainly not the good people of faith and religious beliefs, and surely not the good people who strive every day to do the right thing.

I think the president should address the gun lobbyists, the producers of violent videos and TV shows that present horrible crime scenes with little or no feelings, the Hollywood movie makers , the media that plays news stories for shock value.

Or could the “we” be our very own government, which does very little to pass laws that actually have an affect on all this violence that is in our face and our children’s faces every day?

These may not be the real reasons for what happened in Newtown, but I do believe all of this violence we are subjected to has taken away the respect for human life.
