Letter: Shea-Porter has a strong record in Congress

To the editor:

Do you need reasons to re-elect Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter? The following should convince you.

Reducing the deficit: Shea-Porter voted against wasteful spending and supported a bipartisan commission to reduce the national debt.

Protecting consumers: Shea-Porter voted against Wall Street bailouts (TARP). She voted for the new Wall Street Reform Act to end "too big to fail."

Serving our veterans: She increased VA funding and secured a new inpatient contract at Concord Hospital. She expanded veterans' clinics in New Hampshire and increased post-traumatic stress disorder funding.

Looking out for seniors: Shea-Porter helped reduce prescription drug costs and voted to end medical co-payments and deductibles for preventive services in Medicare.

Supporting the military: Shea-Porter increased pay, benefits, and support for families. She successfully led the fight to close toxic burn pits and held reckless defense contractors accountable.

Lowering taxes: Shea-Porter cut taxes for middle-class families and small businesses.

Helping young people: She cut school loan interest rates, increased Pell Grant money for college students and ensured that young people can remain on their parents' insurance policies until age 26.

Improving health care: Shea-Porter improved the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). She passed insurance reforms such as ending discrimination based on pre-existing conditions and eliminating co-pays and deductibles for preventive care.

Rebuilding the economy: She wrote a bill to make sure the U.S. government follows "Made in the USA" rules. She worked to stop jobs from being shipped overseas and to make trade fair for American workers. She secured funding to protect jobs at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

As you can see, Congresswoman Shea-Porter works hard in Congress. As you can see, she works for all of us — young, old, military, civilians, consumers, taxpayers, and workers.
