---- — To the editor:
This is in response to the “State welfare is a poorly run charity” letter from Aug. 18.
Ms. Berezansky brought up some great points about charity organizations and government assistance programs. The big difference between the two is that the funding for charities are from donations and government assistance programs are funded by mandated taxpayer revenue. Some people say, “If you don’t like it, vote someone else into office to change the laws.” We know that no votes will make a difference in the state of Massachusetts, so we’ll need to concentrate on reform, which is also a touchy subject with politicians here.
As far as the abuse with the system in place now, a good portion of these people receiving benefits contribute absolutely nothing to society. They are consumers only. They exist and consume. It is a learned behavior that is passed down from generation to generation. It was a small percentage back in the 1970s but the numbers are staggering now and it only points to the decline of capitalism, which built this nation, slipping into socialism where any human ambition to succeed and to prosper are squashed by the ideal of total government control. That didn’t work with the Soviets and won’t work here as well. With more and more residents of the United States being dependent on government assistance, one might think that it’s the direction that the world is heading toward. The idealism behind the communist agenda will create a whole future environment of lazy, obese consumers with no ambitions of contributing to society at all.
Look at the city of Lawrence. Some have considered Lawrence as the poster project for socialism with government benefits. Lawrence is also near or at the top of the obesity rate list in the state. How can a city with such a high poverty rate have the largest obesity rate? Can any of you elected officials explain the reasons for this? I thought not. No disrespect towards any heavy people with medical weight control issues but these other people I talk about are the product of their political environment, and politics that serve politicians and their agendas only are the cause of it all.
I urge the voters to look at statistics and facts before they vote for some one or group that has the capability of destroying the world. Maybe a voter ID law that was enforceable would help, too?
Just something to think about.
