Editorial: Some cheers, some jeers for recent newsmakers

JEERS to one or more lunatics who have decided it is great fun to call in bomb threats to Kmart.

It began locally last week when six greater Boston Kmart stores received threats. The Massachusetts State Police bomb squad investigated the threats at Kmarts in Acton, Braintree, Lowell, Milford, Saugus and Somerville but no devices were found.

Previously, Kmarts in other parts of the country had been similarly threatened, including some in the Chicago area in September.

Monday, it was the turn of the Kmart in Salem, N.H., at 161 S. Broadway. Around 2:30 p.m., a caller to the store said three bombs had been planted. The caller said he was going to detonate the devices and told the employee to “enjoy the ride,” Salem Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten said.

The store and others in the shopping plaza — Market Basket, Walgreens, Staples, Lenscrafters and a 99 Restaurant — were evacuated while police investigated. No devices were found.

These criminal acts are disruptive and dangerous to the stores, their neighbors and the people who shop there. We hope whoever is perpetrating these sick acts is caught quickly and punished severely.

CHEERS to Methuen Police Detective John Delano, who was selected for the 2013 Police Officer of the Year award by the Methuen Exchange Club. Delano was cited for his work in helping to capture the suspected “Merrimack Valley Bandit”, who was wanted for a string of bank robberies, and for his work that led to the arrest and conviction of a serial rapist.

Delano will be honored at a dinner and award ceremony at the Merrimack Valley Golf Club in Methuen on Nov. 19.

Congratulations and well done to Delano for his fine work.

CHEERS to the Methuen Memorial Music Hall, which will celebrate its 150th anniversary with an organ concert Saturday evening.

The event celebrates the first concert hall organ in America and will feature performances by a number of artists.
