To the editor:
The Methuen Arbor Group, led and organized by Methuen residents, is expanding Methuen's urban canopy by planting trees across the city of Methuen. Our organization works closely with state and local officials in planning and implementing strategies to plant a diverse selection of trees throughout the community, as part of Methuen's "green initiative." The Methuen Arbor Group has been awarded a state grant and is working in conjunction with Groundwork Lawrence in an effort to plant 50 trees in Methuen this year.
The Arbor Group recently planted eight new trees at the Nevins Library in Methuen. The library funded four of the trees the state grant paid for four additional trees. We would like to thank Mayor Stephen M. Zanni and Philip A. DeCologero for their support, as well as Brad Buschur, the project director of Groundwork Lawrence.
The Methuen Arbor Group has raised $6,000 since this spring. We need to raise an additional $3,000 to complete our project. All checks are made payable to the "City of Methuen" and are to be mailed to the mayor's office at 41 Pleasant St., Methuen, MA, 01844. All donations are tax deductible. A $300 dollar donation funds the planting of one tree. Several individuals and groups have made donations and are planting trees in memory of loved ones. More information on The Methuen Arbor Group can be located on the city of Methuen's website at www.ci.methuen.ma.us. Please call the mayor's office if you have other questions.
We encourage residents in our community to keep us moving forward. You can do this by supporting our mission to help make Methuen a "green" community.
As always, we appreciate the generous support of the city of Methuen and our engaged citizens. Thank you.
Jay B. Griffin
